Why Macfarlanes?

From the outset, I knew that early responsibility and a close, supportive environment would be key factors in my search for the right law firm.  I learnt at my university law fair that Macfarlanes prides itself on these very things. The firm struck me as being understated and quietly confident - a unique and attractive combination which prompted me to apply for a vacation scheme in order to gain further insight.

True flavour of life, work and culture

The scheme commenced with a talk from a partner in which it was emphasised that this was our opportunity to maximise on. It was clear that Macfarlanes genuinely sought to invite students to make the best possible use of their time at the firm and get a true flavour of the life, work and culture by getting involved in as much as possible. This could range from joining trainees on their regular training seminars, to attending training sessions with the various sports teams after work. The firm was our oyster, so to speak, and such a welcome reinforced the open ethos from the beginning.

Exciting and challenging work

Over the two weeks I sat, firstly, in the commercial real estate department, and secondly, in corporate and M&A. I was set clearly outlined tasks, some of which I worked on alone, such as undertaking research and drafting letters, and some of which were carried out alongside trainees and assistants such as completing a verification bundle to a tight deadline which gave a real taste of the work and pace at the firm. Throughout my time in each department I chatted to as many trainees as possible about their experiences to date. It was this that truly confirmed that Macfarlanes could offer me exactly what I was looking for in my training contract: exciting and challenging work, real responsibility and a supportive environment in which to learn.

Social activities

The programme of social activities was well organised and varied, designed to allow students and trainees to bond over the two weeks.  An informative tour of legal London kicked off the week, followed by some mid-week urban golf for a bit of healthy competition, and to finish off the fortnight, dinner and drinks with trainees as a chance to let our hair down after the training contract interviews! In addition, drinks events and lunches throughout the two weeks were well attended by all members of the firm and there were plenty of opportunities to converse with partners on a more informal footing. Overall, the different aspects of the vacation scheme enabled me to build up a full picture of life at the firm and I couldn't recommend it more highly as an invaluable insight.

Collegiate culture

Undoubtedly Macfarlanes is a high achieving and ambitious firm, but its size and collegiate culture ensures a down to earth, encouraging environment which I very much look forward to becoming a part of.
